Two summers ago the debate at Sportsman's Public was whether Ridgefield would ever get a second sit-down restaurant on Main. This summer the question is whether you can keep track of the new ones without a spreadsheet. Between late May and early July, four food businesses opened inside city limits, three more are weeks from a soft launch, and a discount grocer is finishing its shell on Pioneer Street. If you live here, the practical question is no longer what's coming. It's where it's all landing, and what that means for a normal Saturday.
The two Ridgefields taking shape
The city is growing in two directions at once, and they don't share a customer. The I-5 corridor at Exit 14 is filling in around Costco and Washington's first In-N-Out. Downtown, roughly two miles west, is filling in around Main Avenue and the Hillhurst development. Each has its own new tenants, its own parking logic, and its own weekend rhythm. Treating them as one dining scene is how you end up in a twenty-minute drive-thru line when you meant to grab a quick dinner before a walk at the wildlife refuge.
The corridor is where the national and regional chains are anchoring. Downtown and Hillhurst are where the locally owned concepts keep landing. Both matter. They aren't interchangeable.
What actually opened between May and July
The tracker, dated and located, so you can plan around it:
- Wanpo Tea Shop opened in late May at Union Ridge Town Center, 420 North 56th Place, Unit 105, serving handcrafted Taiwanese teas and boba, open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Sovereign, the Cowlitz Indian Tribe's proprietary steakhouse, replaced Michael Jordan's Steak House inside ilani at 1 Cowlitz Way. It opened on June 2, 2026, and runs Tuesday through Sunday from 4:00 to 10:00 pm, closed Mondays, with reservations at 360-887-6423.
- Jersey Mike's Subs opened this summer at Union Ridge Town Center in a 1,160-square-foot space, the company's first location in north Clark County, alongside existing Salmon Creek, Hazel Dell, and East Vancouver stores.
- Cheeky Noodles, a locally owned mac-and-cheese and pasta spot on Hillhurst Avenue, opened on July 2. It's fast-casual, not a chain, and the owners live in or near town.
Four openings in six weeks, three of them within a mile of I-5. That's the shape of the moment.
What's next, and roughly when
The May 2026 Development Summary from the city, cross-referenced with permit filings reported by The Reflector and Clark County Today, shows a second wave already in tenant-improvement stages. A short version:

Two observations worth holding onto. First, Legacy Trails at South Royle Road is quietly becoming a food destination, and Zaiqa is worth watching because they already operate in Portland's South Waterfront, Wilsonville, and Lake Oswego, so this isn't a debut concept working out the kinks. Second, Indian cuisine has genuinely been absent from Ridgefield's lineup until now. Zaiqa fills a category, not a slot.
The August calendar, in the order it happens
The month is unusually front-loaded. Here is what a resident's planner should already have on it:
Friday, August 1: Ridgefield Day of Festivals. A downtown gathering that pairs well with the Ridgefield Farmers Market, which runs at Davis Park Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., June through September.
Thursday, August 7 through Sunday, August 16: Clark County Fair. The fairgrounds have a Ridgefield address, 17402 NE Delfel Road, 98642, sitting at the I-5 junction a few exits south of downtown. The savings play locals often miss: admission is free on opening day, Friday, August 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a Fred Meyer voucher. Vouchers have been available since July 5 at participating stores, and for Ridgefield residents, Salmon Creek is the closest Fred Meyer. The carnival opens at noon, meaning you can walk in free at 10, wander the exhibit halls, and be inside the gates when rides start.
Thursday, August 27: Gabriel Iglesias at the Cowlitz Ballroom inside ilani, 8:00 pm.
Saturday, September 26: Mötley Crüe at the Cascades Amphitheater, 6:30 pm. Not August, but on-sale windows tend to close in August, and the Amphitheater's summer calendar is the reason parking at ilani gets weird on show nights.
A downtown afternoon vs. a Union Ridge run
This is where the two-Ridgefields idea earns its keep. Consider two versions of the same Saturday.
The downtown loop, roughly noon to five: farmers market at Davis Park, walk south on Main to Little Conejo for tacos, which started as a food truck at Carts by the Park before graduating into the full restaurant, with pedigree tracing to the beloved Little Conejo in Vancouver. Coffee at one of the Hillhurst spots, then dinner at Sportsman's Public, a Ridgefield original with a pool-table side and a family side, good burgers and ribs, and a bar atmosphere that hasn't been focus-grouped. Total driving inside this loop: under a mile.
The Union Ridge run, roughly the same window: Costco, a Wanpo boba, a sub from Jersey Mike's for the drive home, or a longer evening that ends at Sovereign inside ilani. Total driving: five to ten minutes between stops, plus the I-5 access.
The point isn't that one is better. It's that they answer different questions. If you're hosting out-of-town family, downtown reads as the more distinctive Ridgefield. If you're catching a concert at the Amphitheater or the Cowlitz Ballroom, the corridor is already on your route.
The traffic quirk worth planning around
One thing residents near the Costco corner have been dealing with: the city rebuilt the traffic circle at North 56th Place and Pioneer Street ahead of the In-N-Out opening, adding a designated turn lane into Union Ridge Town Center and temporarily closing the northbound exit on the roundabout while Pioneer Street construction continues. Translation for locals: if your normal route home cuts through that roundabout, check it before assuming the pattern is what it was in the spring. And on days with a fresh In-N-Out crowd or a fair-week surge, law enforcement is enforcing the ban on parking or lining up on Pioneer Street, 56th Place, Pioneer Canyon Drive, and I-5 ramps. A tow is a bad souvenir.
What this actually says about Ridgefield right now
A quiet pattern is holding. The corridor gets the chains and the volume. Downtown and Hillhurst keep landing owner-operated concepts, and the city keeps approving them. Cheeky Noodles is the tell. It's fast-casual comfort food built by locals on Hillhurst Avenue, opening the same summer as Panda Express files site plans two miles east. Both are welcome. Neither cancels out the other. If you already live here, that split is the practical fact worth carrying around. It changes where you send friends, how you time errands, and which side of town you head to when someone says "let's just get dinner."
